Christmas crafting season is already getting started, which makes now a good time to plan ornaments for your tree, your gift list, or your holiday market table. With UV DTF transfers, you can add a detailed design to a compatible hard-surface ornament without a heat press. The transfer goes on by hand.
Whether you’re making one keepsake for someone you love or a small batch to sell, here are 15 ideas to get you started.
First, choose the right blank
UV DTF transfers are peel-and-stick decals made for compatible hard surfaces. They can work well on smooth glass, glazed ceramic, acrylic, metal, hard plastic, and smooth, sealed wood. They are not made for fabric.
Choose a clean, smooth surface, and test an unfamiliar finish before making a whole batch. Raw or rough wood can be porous, so seal it and let it dry fully before applying a transfer. Measure the flat, usable area of the ornament, not just its full diameter, and leave room around the edges, curves, and hanging hole.
For fabric ornaments, use a garment DTF transfer instead. Proverbs Thirty What offers both custom UV DTF gang sheets for hard goods and DTF gang sheets for fabric projects.

15 ornament ideas to make this season
1. Names for everyone in the family
Give each person an ornament with their name, nickname, or initials. Use one shared color palette to make the set feel coordinated, while choosing a different small icon for each person.

2. A first Christmas keepsake
Mark a baby’s first Christmas, a couple’s first holiday together, or the first year in a new home. Add the year so the milestone stays easy to remember.

3. Pet portraits and paw prints
Create an ornament featuring a pet’s name, a paw-print motif, or a simple illustration inspired by their personality. A small photo or name can make this one feel especially personal.

4. A family recipe ornament
Add a short recipe title, a handwritten-style line, or a small baking illustration. It’s a sweet way to remember holiday baking with someone special, especially if their cookies are the reason the tin never lasts until Christmas.

5. Teacher and school-staff gifts
Use a small apple, book, or pencil design, then add the teacher’s name or school year. These work as thoughtful gifts for teachers, classroom assistants, coaches, and other school helpers.

6. Newlywed or anniversary ornament
Celebrate a wedding, anniversary, or first Christmas as a married couple with names and a date. Simple lettering and a small heart or wreath can keep the design readable on a small blank.

7. A remembrance ornament
Choose a gentle symbol, such as a cardinal, flower, or star, and add a name or year if it feels right. A quiet, thoughtful design can offer a comforting way to remember someone during the holidays.

8. Hobby-inspired designs
Make an ornament for the person who loves gardening, reading, music, camping, crafting, or baking. A small, recognizable icon paired with their name often works better than squeezing in too many details.

9. Hometown and state ornaments
Feature a state outline, town name, coordinates, or a local landmark-inspired design. These can make lovely gifts for neighbors, family members who have moved away, or anyone who loves where they’re from.

10. Matching best-friend ornaments
Make a pair with matching designs, complementary sayings, or each friend’s name. They’re small, easy-to-wrap gifts that can become part of a tradition.

11. Funny holiday sayings
Use a short seasonal joke, a family catchphrase, or a line that makes your recipient smile. Keep the words large enough to read at a glance; tiny text can get lost on a curved ornament.

12. A grandparent keepsake
Add “Grandma,” “Grandpa,” or another family nickname, along with the grandchildren’s names or the year. If there are lots of names, check the layout at its final size before printing.

13. Sports and team spirit
Use a ball, jersey number, or general team-color design to celebrate a favorite sport. If you’re making ornaments to sell, only use team logos or other protected artwork if you have permission.

14. An advent countdown set
Create a coordinated set of numbered ornaments or seasonal icons for a small tabletop tree. Repeating the same shape and colors helps the collection feel intentional, even when each day’s design is different.

15. A “made this year” ornament
Mark a family tradition, a big move, a new job, or simply the year you made it together. It doesn’t have to be a major milestone. Sometimes the ordinary year is the one you’ll be glad to remember.

Make a batch with a UV DTF gang sheet
If you’re making several ornaments, a gang sheet can help you arrange multiple designs on one custom sheet. Mix names, icons, small sayings, and a few repeat designs to use the space efficiently. For example, make a set of family names and include extra paw prints or snowflakes to fill open areas.
Before placing an order:
- Measure each blank’s usable area. Check curves and bevels as well as the overall size.
- Set each design to its intended print size. The UV DTF gang sheet builder lets you upload, resize, and duplicate artwork. Its product instructions recommend 300 DPI artwork, a transparent background, and a minimum line thickness of 0.02 inches. Upload artwork at the size you want printed.
- Leave space between designs. Allow room to cut each transfer apart without trimming into neighboring artwork.
- Check legibility. Fine lettering and tiny details can be hard to apply and see on a small ornament.
- Review the layout before ordering. Don’t mirror or flip the artwork; the product instructions say the print orientation is handled for you.

Apply the transfer carefully
Use the application instructions supplied with your transfer. As a general guide, clean the blank according to its material and let it dry completely. Keep fingers, oils, and dust away from the adhesive. Position the design before it touches the surface, because it may not be repositionable once applied.
Burnish firmly from the center outward, paying attention to small details and edges. Then peel the clear carrier film slowly at a low angle. If part of the design lifts, lay the film back down and burnish that spot again. For more detail, follow this UV DTF application guide.
Don’t assume every blank or transfer has the same care requirements. Follow the supplier’s instructions, and be cautious with finished items: hand-washing and avoiding soaking or harsh scrubbing can help protect decorated hard goods.
The same general peel-and-stick approach is used for projects like UV DTF cup wraps, but a wrap needs to fit the cup’s curve and usable area. Measure and test the cup separately rather than assuming an ornament-sized layout will work.
Gift them, sell them, or make them together
A personalized ornament can be a small gift on its own, or part of a larger bundle with a card, treats, or a matching keepsake. For craft fairs and online shops, consider offering family sets, pet ornaments, teacher gifts, and first-Christmas designs. Show a finished sample and make personalization options easy to understand.
If you’re creating a batch to sell, test one transfer on each type of blank first. Photograph the finished ornament clearly, and include care guidance that matches the transfer and blank you used.
And if you’d rather give someone a finished keepsake, our custom photo wooden ornament is made to order and features an interchangeable insert for a photo, artwork, name, or design.
The best ornament doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with a smooth blank, choose a design that means something to you, and make a little room in your holiday plans for creating.
